Assignment Task

Brief

As a natural resource officer working for the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), you have already undertaken the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the South Creek catchment and considered the impacts of the proposed urban and infrastructure development on various aspects of the environment. You have also been to the field and collected some baseline data on environmental quality.

It is now your job to write a grant application to the NSW Environmental Trust Protecting Our Places program to deliver a rehabilitation project that will improve the environmental condition and health of South Creek. Your project site is the section of South Creek you visited on the field trip - north of The Kingsway and near the Kingsway sports fields.

As you are well aware, resources for environmental management are scarce and successful applications must have clear objectives, be fully justified and researched, have a well-developed plan of works and a budget that will be good value for money.

Part

1. Fully completed grant application using the Environmental Trust grant application template. File available on iLearn called “Assignment 3 - Env Trust - Protecting-our-places- program-application-form - modified”. Hint: you have a lot of information and data that you collected via desk-top and field analyses for the REF assessment. You would be wise to use what you learnt in the REF to inform various parts of the grant application.

2. The maps for your project as required by the Environmental Trust grant. A file titled “Environmental - Guide-to-developing-maps-for-environmental-trust-grant-applications” is located in the Assessment 3 folder. This guide provides a step-by-step method for producing maps that are suitable for an Environmental Trust grant. Remember, SEED contains a lot of useful information you could add to maps. However, you DO NOT need to use SEED to produce the maps for this assignment. See instructions within the grant application form about the requirements for these maps.

  • For Section B3 of the grant application you will need to produce a catchment map of South Creek and add any relevant environmental information or data you think is relevant for your chosen rehabilitation project. Think of this map as a regional setting and context map. Remember to add the project site location to this map. For example if you choose Project 5, your B3 map will need to include the distribution of threatened species you are trying to protect.
  • For Section B4 of the grant application you will need to produce a map that is focussed on the works plan at the project site as noted in “Your Brief” above, and that you visited in the field. For this assignment you are expected to produce a top-quality map (better than those in the Environmental Trust guide). The works map needs to be set out like a plan (think of an architects plan for constructing a house) that you could give to a contractor or team member that they could implement. This means that the map should contain detail on the sequence and stages of activities that links directly to a series of steps that you should have outlined in full in the workplan section of the grant application.
