Assignment Task: Ridgefield farm is spread across approximately 1500 hectares located on Page Road, West Pingelly, Western Australia (S 32° 30’ 23” – E 116° 59’ 31”) (Google Maps, n.d.). The University of Western Australia under Future Farm 2020 vision is implementing evidence-based best practices of crop and livestock science, energy resource management, and architecture in Ridgefield farm with the aim of providing food and clothing to 50 per cent more world population by 2050 (UWA, 2018). Western Australia is the wheat growing region of Australia contributing to one-third of the country’s wheat production. In addition to agriculture, rearing of livestock is also undertaken in farms of Western Australia. The farms in this region are rain-fed (Lacoste, & Kragt, 2018). Anthropogenic land use activities can adversely impact the ecology of a region. The native vegetation of Western Australia was cleared for growing wheat. Transpiration level of the wheat plantation was less than the native plants, thus, the groundwater level has risen. However, as a consequence, saline water tables of the region also increased (Holmes, & Lillicrap, 2011). Agricultural practices of intensive cropping, greater sizes of livestock herds, and shorter plantation cycles, and increased traffic of agricultural vehicles has led to soil compaction in Western Australia. This is detrimental because it affects the agricultural productivity of this region. The dried topsoil is buried and deeper clayey soil is brought to the surface by the practice of ripping. This is done to remediate soil compaction.
