Highlights
Virtual Laboratory
Observing chemical reactions; Physical and chemical changes
You will be completing a virtual laboratory exercise for this assessment. This activity comprises six separate experiments. Each experiment has been carried out in the university laboratories and captured to video for your benefit. You will need to watch each experiment carefully, make scientific observations and record these as needed in this workbook.
You can pause and restart the video as needed and watch it again if you feel you have missed something. It may be a good idea to view the experiment in full screen to catch as much detail as possible.
Safety
Many of the chemicals used in the laboratory are toxic, corrosive and potentially harmful to health. Due care should always be exercised when working in the laboratory.
You should wear gloves when handling chemicals. Any chemical that contacts the skin should be immediately washed off with water.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the laboratory.
Solid, closed shoes and long trousers are to be worn when working in the laboratory. Thongs, open-toed sandals, short pants and skirts are not suitable and wearers will be asked to leave.
Chemical reactions; Physical and chemical changes
This should be completed prior to watching the video. These responses should assist you when completing the rest of the assessment activity.
Products of reactions: Physical or chemical changes
This virtual laboratory consists of six experiments. Please watch the video to see each of the experiments performed and make the required observations.
For each experiment you need to:
Part
A. Observations
B. Products of the reaction
A test tube is filled to about a 3 cm depth with 2M hydrochloric acid and a small strip of magnesium ribbon is added to the acid, the test tube is stoppered to trap a gaseous product.
