The object of document analysis is to put a historical document into context, to understand what it is saying, why it was written, and why it is significant to our understanding of the past.
Document analyses shall be between 250 and 500 words each and submitted through the appropriate submission folder on the course website.
You must list any sources (lectures, outside sources, etc.) you used in preparing the document analysis.
Document analyses should examine the assigned document in terms of the following main categories (in bolded print below; the questions that follow are amongst the questions you may wish to ask in analyzing the document):
1. Define the type of document:
a. What kind of document is it – a letter; a government memorandum; a painting; a diary entry; a court document; etc?
2. Describe key aspects of the document:
a. Who wrote it?
b. Who was the intended audience?
c. What era or time period is it from?
d. Which country is it from?
3. Interpret and explain the document:
a. What was the purpose of the author(s) in writing the document?
b. What specific points in the document tell you this?
c. What was the historical context (what other events or developments were going on) in which the document was written and helps illustrate the purpose of the author?
4. Why is this document significant?
a. What do we learn from the document that is important to our understanding of environmental history in this period?
b. How does this document help us understand other information from this period?
