Abstract

Vocabulary is an essential skill for gaining knowledge of a language, especially the English language. The development of vocabulary increases the proficiency level of that precise language. Moreover, social media platforms are recognised worldwide for their role in providing users with new and unfamiliar vocabularies. Hence, a study has been motivated to find out the perception of BTESL students towards enhancing vocabulary through social media at MSU. Besides that, it additionally aims to observe the factors that contribute to motivating BTESL students to enhance their vocabulary in English through social media at MSU. This is a quantitative descriptive study in which BTESL students from MSU participated. The items from the questionnaire have been answered on a Likert scale. It was created using Google Forms. It was distributed to the respondents through the WhatsApp platform after approval by the supervisor. Cronbach alpha reliability testing of the instrument was conducted prior to the main study. Furthermore, the results are analysed using SPSS software. In short, the research study found that the majority of BTESL students at MSU perceive vocabulary enhancement through social media positively. Hence, it's fitting to conclude that social media is a powerful academic tool that complements enhancing vocabulary in primarily twenty-first-century study based pedagogy.

Introductory

Vocabulary helps in learning language skills in the English language. For example, vocabulary plays an important role in expressing ideas and in the exchange of information while speaking and writing. Besides that, reading is also influenced by vocabulary because it makes understanding the content of a text easier. Finally, vocabulary gives the capability to listen to content and prevent misunderstandings during the exchange of information. Thus, it is important to come up with teaching and learning methods that enhance vocabulary, which are needed in language learning. On that note, in this 21st-century era, generations are dominated by the usage of technology, especially the strong influence of social media. Social media platforms are known to expose new vocabulary. As a result, this research study has started to examine the perceptions of BTESL students towards enhancing vocabulary through social media at MSU. Thus, this is the first chapter of this study, and this chapter is to introduce and deepen understanding of this study.

The purpose of this study is :-

1. To investigate the perception of BTESL students towards enhancing vocabulary through social media in MSU

2. To explore the factors that contribute to motivating BTESL students to enhance their vocabulary in english language through social media in MSU
