TASK

ASSIGNMENT 1:
Applied Research Skills: Instructions

This assessment has been designed to encourage you to make an early start on your research proposal, and to give you feedback on your ideas, structure and technique. If you submit this on time, you will get detailed feedback within 10 days. There is no specified format for the submission. You can submit this assessment on the Research Proposal pro-forma, with the required elements in the appropriate sections. You could make this as complete as you like. Or, you can make a separate document. In either case it should include at least the following elements: A title, or topic area. This may be a developed title, as required for final proposal, or a description of the topic on which the research will be done. It should give the marker enough information to know, in general terms, what the proposal will be about.
An aim or aims. This is what you actually intend to do. The best aims can be written as a hypothesis (‘that X will happen when Y’), because this makes it easier to decide
what work needs to be done to test the hypothesis. You can use other formats, such as a question (‘will X happen if Y’). Keep the number of aims small: one is usually best; 2 or 3 may be okay in some circumstances.
A list of important sources of information relevant to the proposal, together with some commentary or critical analysis of at least some of these. This could also be a draft literature review. Before starting work on your proposal you will need to have read at least 5-6 items (journal articles, book chapters, reliable web sites) that give you the general background to the topic, and to related experimental work. You should provide a reference list of what you have found so far, formatted in correct style so that you can get feedback on bibliographic formatting. You should provide commentary on at least some of these by writing either:

  • A paragraph or two of critical literature review that cites some of your sources; or
  • An annotated bibliography, giving a summary of the key points of the paper(s) including aim, methods (if appropriate), results/findings and conclusions; or

An outline of the research that you propose. This does not need to be very detailed, but it does need to indicate what type of work will be done (e.g. field trial, lab experiment, survey, structured literature review, data analysis such as GIS).
There should be an indication of the scope of the work (time frame, spatial scale). You should provide enough information to see how this proposed work will test your hypothesis or answer your question. If there are things you need help with (such as finding particular methods, aspects of experimental design or choosing statistical techniques) please tell me this in this section.
