PART 1: CALCULATING AIR PRESSURE ON YOUR BODY
Imagine that you are lying on the beach (sounds nice right about now...)
We often measure pressure in PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). Standard sea level pressure is 14.7 psi. Lets determine how many pounds of air are pressing down on you by calculating the approximate surface area of the front side of a human body...

There are two ways that you can do this lab at home;
1. If you have a tape measure or ruler at home, take measurements of your own body (or one of your family members)
2. If you do not have a tape measure or ruler, you can use the dimensions provided in this diagram to answer the questions.

PART 2: EVIDENCE OF A CHANGE IN AIR PRESSURE

The island of Maui is made up mostly of a giant shield volcano that rises 13,000 feet above sea level. This mountain is called Haleakal?. Imagine you hike to the top and you drink a bottle of water on the way up. When you get to the top, you finish your water and put the cap back on. Then you put your empty bottle in your backpack and begin your descent.

The pictures below show the shape change sequence of the water bottle as you descend the mountain.
a. Picture 1 is at the top of the volcano just after finishing the water in the bottle and resealing it.
b. Picture 2 shows what the bottle looked like 1⁄2 way down the volcano.
c. Picture 3 shows what the bottle looked like at the bottom of the volcano.
