To effectively practice in the human service field, you need to have the emotional tools, meaning relationships, insight, compassion, and social engagement. As human service workers, we need to have a clear awareness of how we place ourselves in the world, as well as developing an understanding of how the world around us is socially constructed by powerful influences (chapter 1). This essay will be discussing how human service work is an opportunity for social change, how our own values impact our view on the world, and how political and social ideologies can impact the effectiveness of human service work.
Knowing ourselves is the precursor to the concept known as effective 'use of self' (chapter 1). Generally, you would have influential life events, relationships, social changes, economic and political imperatives, and have had exposure to experiences that have shaped your values, attitudes, and beliefs (chapter 1). Although these factors are of influence, it is always important to consider how the early influences in your life such as your ethnicity, gender, class, education, religion, and spirituality were the shape your values and beliefs in some way before experiencing life experiences (chapter1). Personally, my ethnicity is Greek and Egyptian. I was raised Greek Orthodox and mainly brought up within the Greek culture. Growing up all my values and beliefs were put onto me by my parents, my family, and my cultural beliefs.
