1. Be structured around a main argument. Each essay topic poses a question which you must answer directly. Whatever your answer is, it is the core of your essay and the rest of the essay ought to be built around it. This will be your guide as to what you should and should not include in the essay. This course has presented you with many arguments, both for and against every philosophy examined to date. You will not be able to survey all of that material in this essay, so your task is to select what is most pertinent, and what is most compelling, and craft it into your own essay. What your main argument will be is entirely your choice – so make a wise choice!

2. Demonstrate familiarity with the basic course material. In order to pass, it must be clear that you have grasped the basic material on Dualism, IDT and Behaviourism. Do note, though, that the primary objective of this essay is not merely to reproduce that basic material; basic material (such as definitions) ought to be included in the essay only insofar as they support 1; that is, only insofar as they are relevant to the main argument you have developed. Your words are limited so there is no space for waffle.

3. While a passing essay must demonstrate familiarity with the basic course material, a good essay should do much more than that. A good essay should show that, not only has the student grasped the basic material, they have also really thought about it. That is, a good essay will also display evidence of original critical engagement with the basic material. Of course, nobody expects you at undergrad level to develop a whole new philosophy of mind (indeed, this amount of originality should actually be discouraged), but we do expect excellent students to do more than just regurgitate what others have said; it needs to be clear that you have at least some of your own thoughts about that material too. 4. Be professionally and thoroughly referenced. Use whatever method of referencing you are most comfortable with, as long as it is thorough and is consistently applied throughout the essay. It should go without saying that if you employ any material at all - whether directly quoted or paraphrased - from another source, then it ought to be appropriately attributed to that source. Absolutely no plagiarism will be tolerated.
