What is 'Australian Indigenous epistemology' according to Indigenous academics?
OK, so how do you approach this topic? Here are a few suggestions:
Make sure you have a sound understanding of the terms 'knowledge' and 'epistemology' from your own perspective and a clear understanding of what the terms mean in the academy. to this end, and in preparation for inclusion in your assignment, complete the following tasks.
a shortish explanation of the term epistemology - a paragraph or so.
a short explanation of the current thinking in the west about how we come to know - theory of knowledge.
Now you have had a chance to explore those ideas, compare them with the key elements you have drawn from the work of the Indigenous authors you have read earlier (both the articles identified above and your own research).
How are they the same?
How are they different?
Whilst this assessment item is linked to the theoretical, the key is to start thinking now about how the similarities and differences in epistemological thought can have an impact on the development and implementation of policy. Use your journal to take notes on this and we'll return to it later in the semester.
Now plan what you will include in your essay. I think the following might be a good plan for an essay structure.
Think about the way that he characterizes Australian Indigenous epistemology and start researching for other sources of information that may assist you in building your understanding of this concept.
You may find the following references and theses a good place to start: Go looking elsewhere for information that may help you to articulate your understanding of Indigenous Epistemology, but carefully scrutinize each resource you use and ask yourself the following questions:
1. Who is this person?
2. From what social and cultural position is s/he writing? Are they Indigenous or are they speaking through a lens of the western academy?
Think about whose ideas you are using and what the implications might be if you include their ideas into the mix. I am happy for you to use non-indigenous authors to strengthen your ideas and build an argument, but I don’t want to see an argument based upon references to authors who are providing information and knowledge second-hand.
what are you going to talk about?
what are you trying to achieve?
what are the areas under discussion and what are the limits of that discussion? and what caveats do you need to place on the discussion -ie what are the limitations on the authority of sources and what limitations do you place on yourself as the author etc?
Discussion
Draw the threads of your argument in the previous section together to see if you can summarise the literature and allude to implications in the light of the essay question.
CONCLUSION
Reiterate the key points from the paper and refer back to the important points you raise in the introduction and the discussion. Try and see if you can finish off your paper with a positive or a challenge (something that leaves the reader feeling they have something succinct to act on).
Please include Reference List and a short Praxiography.
The Praxiography is not included in the word count. Make it short (say 50 words).
If need more info about Praxiography,
Praxis is another term for action or practice. It connotes action that derives from theoretical considerations. A praxis is the actions that are the outcome of your theoretical positioning on a topic or idea. Praxiography is a term used to describe the recording of actions in that sort of context and is a word used to describe research that investigates actions. So a Praxiography, in the sense of this assignment, is this term co-opted to mean a list of actions that have arisen out of the work you have done in researching and preparing your assessed work. It is not a usual addition to an academic work like an essay, but I am introducing it here as part of your assessment to highlight the important relationship between being, knowing, and doing. Your work (I hope) will have an effect on how you see the world and actions are likely to flow from this. It might be a:
the conversation you have with someone (or even yourself);
change in your own behavior;
change in practices at your workplace or a social or family setting;
change in practice or orientation in a relationship (either professional or personal).
It could be a range of different things, but I'm wanting you to reflect on how a change in what you know effects a change in what you do. At this stage I'm looking for a short paragraph (no more than 100 words) that provides a succinct explanation of how the work has affected what you do. It will include a short description and then a short analysis of how your action links back to theory.
As this is your first time having to consider this type of work, use the guideline to assist you in completing this component of your assessment.
In this assignment, limit yourself to one or two entries in your radiography. That will mean one or two instances of how your research and theory work here has affected what you do.
Here are some examples:
Understanding that how I make knowledge is different to other people, has made me more aware of the assumptions that I make in our planning meetings. Last week I was able to challenge an assumption brought to the planning session about an action that involved low socio-economic clients we deal with and the following discussion resulted in a slight change in direction of the planning process.After reading this week's reading and thinking about the extent to which we are able to know something, I ended up having a great conversation with a good friend who had never considered this before either. We enjoyed the challenge of the conversation, and she wants to meet regularly to hear what else I am learning about.
