Examination of steady state balance using Limits of Stability and Functional Reach tests Introduction Postural stability defines one’s ability to maintain their centre of gravity within the base of support. As we move from static posture (steady state balance) to dynamic (proactive/reactive balance) there are different types of assessments we can perform. Assessments of steady state posture include postural stability test which involves the tracking of the centre of mass and deviations from centre. A limits of stability test is used to assess the extremes of which a person can balance. This has important applications within various populations (such as when reaching for objects). However these tests (much like postural stability tests) can require specialised equipment. While they likely provide much greater validity and reliability, it is not yet known how a cheaper ‘field’ based version compares. In this experiment you will complete two tasks: limits of stability test on the Biodex; and the multidirectional reach test. The aim of this task is to compare outcome variables between the two assessments of postural stability.

Methods

Each student will complete both tests in a randomised order. Firstly, record your demographic data in the spreadsheet provided (DOB, gender, height, body mass, any lower limb surgeries in previous 12 months). Then press the random number generator button in the spreadsheet. If the number is ODD, complete you will complete the limits of stability test first, and if the number is EVEN, you will complete the multidirectional reach test first.

Multidirectional reach test About the test: The functional reach test in an inexpensive and easy tool to assess limits of stability. However, this only measure performance in a forward direction. The test involves the subject reaching forward as far as possible along side a wall, with a ruler/measuring tape attached horizontally. The distance reached is recorded. The multidirectional reach test used today is a modification of Newton (2001). Previously examined the validity of the multidirectional reach test in four directions, alongside the Berg balance test and Timed Up and Go. Today we will modify this test further to assess directly to the LOS performed on the Biodex.
