b. A site consists of a deep uniform clay deposit with void ratio, e = 1.2, specific gravity Gs = 2.6, and with the water table at a depth of 2 m. Due to prolonged rainfall the water table rises to the surface. Determine:
i) the effective stress at a depth of 4 m initially and after the water table rise.
ii) the change in effective stress at 4 m and hence explain whether the water table rise will cause the soil surface to settle or heave.
c. During disaster relief operations in a remote part of the world you find yourself responsible for a road reconstruction where the only material available is from a mine site which is known to have specific gravity, Gs = 4.30. No soils test laboratory is available, and you only have access to water, a balance and microwave.
i) Describe briefly tests and other equipment that you could use to estimate an appropriate specification for the dry density for the road.
ii) From the tests you estimate a dry density of 2.9 t/m3 at a moisture content of 10% which is significantly higher than in any textbook you can find.
