Aim of assessment Nurses in palliative care are required to have knowledge of current policies an changes that may affect how care is delivered. These changes can sometimes be polarising and challenge the nurse both professionally and personally. The Voluntary Assisted Dying Act was passed in 2022 in the state of New South Wales and is available in several states including Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania. The Bill will impact on nursing practice and the way that care is delivered particularly in relation to advance care planning and palliative care. The aim of the assessment is to encourage students to develop sound and objective evidence-based arguments related to a topic that is/will affect the delivery of healthcare.

Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) and you will be required to develop an argument and respond to the following statement:

Patients should have access to voluntary assisted dying if they wish to. In your presentation, construct your argument to the following questions: 

1. What are the ethical considerations for or against VAD? 

2. Can the safety of patients who have elected for VAD be ensured, and how? 

3. What will be the impact of VAD in the advance care planning process
