Task Groups are given a company or companies with questions relating to ethical conduct in society and a company’s responsibility to behave ethically as part of their social licence in the community
Groups will need to research at least three relevant sources about the company and ethical issues surrounding the topic that they have been allocated. A recent news article that highlights an ethical issue the company is dealing with can be included as one of the sources. These sources must be acknowledged in the presentation using appropriate referencing. The group will then develop a panel discussion based on this ethical issue. Where it is not possible to have groups of equal numbers of students,’ requirements may be altered by the Lecturer and advised to the groups.
A panel discussion is defined as a group of people discussing a topic in front of an audience. The purpose of a panel discussion is to have conversation around a topic. It is meant to encourage discussion and debate by the panel and with the audience.
The lecturer will be the moderator for the panel discussion. At the beginning of each group presentation, power point slides may be used to outline the issue to the audience. Groups may choose other methods to outline the issues but reading from prepared documents will be marked down as reading from prepared notes does not stimulated discussion and does not demonstrate a thorough grasp of the topic.
Each presentation group must prepare questions related to the topic that the lecturer will ask to prompt the initial discussion. The group may prepare answers to the questions in advance but reading/ reciting the answers from the prepared question notes will be marked down. Each group member must be well rehearsed and understand the answer that they have prepared. As moderator the lecturer may invite other questions or discussion from the audience.
As part of the assessment, the group must prepare a script or outline of their presentation. As part of that script/outline they must include details of the research that they have undertaken and the academic references. All groups must provide this information to the lecturer on or before the due date regardless of when group is presenting, being earlier or later in the week.
The group members will respond to the questions from the moderator and by the audience. One of the group members will represent the company in question and the other two group members will represent stakeholder groups affected by the ethical issue. A stakeholder is anyone that is affected by the operations of the company. A stakeholder can be part of the company like employees, shareholders, directors and external to the company such as customers, environmental groups, labour unions, government or society. To make the presentation and discussion as clear as possible, only two stake holder groups should be represented, in that way one panel member will represent the company, and two panellists will represent one stake holder each. Choose a stakeholder who will be most affected by any changes or issues that the group is presenting. Make sure that the issues that you have researched are outlined in your presentation, and that arguments from the perspective of the company and stakeholders are given. The moderator will open the presentation and invite the group to present the issues. The moderator will then ask the prepared questions to the group. Again, the questions that you prepare must cover all three perspectives. The company, and the two stakeholders.
The question and responses must be sufficient for the audience to understand the ethical dimensions of the case. The panel is not meant to come up with an “answer” as to what is the correct position but rather the panel must be able to make students realize and critically reflect on the various perspectives of the ethical dilemma and its relevance to business, the workplace, and the community.
The Presentations and panel discussion will be conducted in the class time on Monday and Wednesday tutorial, 13 and 15th of September. Scripts, / outlines and questions for the moderator must be in the drop box on Studysmart by 5pm on Friday 10th March.in Week 9. Students do not need to submit any further written report.
Each presentation of the Issues should not be longer than 10 minutes panel discussion time will be 10-12 minutes. Three students from other groups will be called on by the moderator to critique the overall presentation as part of the assessment process and guidelines for the critique are attached to this document.
All students must contribute to their group presentation and input should be as equal as possible. Each group should decide amongst themselves how the work is allocated. If a student has special skills in an area make sure you use those skills, but that means other students should take up more of the other tasks. All students should participate in part of the research. Marks will be allocated equally to the group.
