Ethical issues in research (500 words)

A researcher conducts a study with the aim of examining the relationship between body weight and discrimination in employment settings. She designs an experiment to test whether women with obesity face more discrimination when applying for customer-facing jobs than non-customer facing jobs. Within the same experiment, she also tests whether weight-related employment discrimination is worse for women with obesity than for men with obesity.

Her experiment is based on a 2 x 2 between-subjects design, in which participants are asked to read a position description and a fictitious description of a job candidate and then to indicate how likely they are to recommend the candidate for the position (1= very unlikely to recommend hiring to 7=very likely to recommend hiring). The researcher wants participants to be naïve to the purpose of the experiment, so she tells them she is doing a study on the role of cognitive styles in hiring decision making (she does not tell them that it’s actually a study of weight-related employment discrimination). To uphold her cover story, she includes a cognitive styles scale in her questionnaire. At the end of the questionnaire, she also asks participants to report their sex and to answer questions about their own personal experiences with weight-related discrimination.

Question 2.

The scientific method and measurement concepts (500 words)

The scientific method is characterised by an empirical approach. Key concepts include operational definitions of constructs, reliable and valid measures, and testable hypotheses. Answer the following: Choose two psychological concepts you think could be related (correlated) to each other e.g., boredom and binge watching (Do not use this example yourself).

(a) Provide a conceptual definition for each concept and write a brief rationale that describes why you think the two variables might be related. 

(b) State a hypothesis that flows from your rationale and includes both constructs.

(c) Provide an operational definition for the constructs you chose. How would you measure these variables? You can use established measures. 

(d) Using the operational definitions and measures you provided, list and discuss:

• a. two types of reliability
• b. two types of validitys

Explain why you think these are important in this context.

Question 3.

Sampling methods (500 words)

A sports psychologist who works with elite athletes has been concerned about the length of time A grade sports players take to recover from physical injuries. He talks with colleagues about this and receives conflicting opinions. The sports psychologist himself believes that recovery depends on motivational factors. Others believe it depends on how long athletes have been playing professionally and lifestyle factors. The sports psychologist conducts a study to find out.

Answer the following:

(a) Should the sports psychologist conduct a qualitative study (interviews) or a quantitative study (survey)? Justify your choice. 2 marks

(b) Which sampling technique do you recommend for this study? Describe this technique in detail in the context of the approach you have chosen in (a). 

(c) Justify why you chose this sampling technique for this study. 

(d) Outline the advantages of your chosen technique in the context of this study.

(e) Outline the disadvantages of your chosen technique in the context of this study.
