The Business:  
(Like the Student Bio’s, leave the bold categories intact, delete my stuff and add your stuff. This page is the template. Do not change it. One full-page, one-inch white space all around.) Come up with a good title for your project. Add authors and dates. We can have up to 3 students per team, including going it alone. Describe the business for which you will propose an innovative technology solution. Do not discuss the solution in this section. Include the name of the business, location, approximate number of employees, the product or service the business provides, status of the business, a profile of the customers, and the departments or functions within the business. The order of the preferred company for the project is one that 
(i) employs you now, 
(ii) will employ you upon graduation, 
(iii) has employed you in the past, 
(iv) you wish to start yourself, or 
(v) you know something about it. Tell us which. 
Experience with the Business:  
Describe a team member’s experience with the business, e.g. the job, length of employment, job responsibilities, etc. How well does the team member know the business?
The Problem/Opportunity for Improvement: First, remove either the word “Problem” or the phrase “Opportunity for Improvement.” You decide. Describe the steps of a business process in the business. Identify the particular step(s) where there is a problem or an opportunity for improvement. Explain why it is a problem or an opportunity for improvement. 
The Solution: Describe your idea for solving the problem or offering improvement. Explain how the idea would benefit the company. Remember that benefits can include (1) saving money, (2) saving time, (3) increasing the quality of the product or service provided, (4) reducing errors and mistakes, (5) reducing the number of people required for a task, (6) setting the stage for further solutions to other problems, (7) setting the stage for growth and expansion of the company, (8) making customers or employees happier. Explain how your idea will realize one or more of these benefits. Provide an original picture and caption.
Analysis

1. Research on the Solution   The way that each project addresses this step probably will be different. First, do some web searches on key terms to see if any company or research is doing your solution. Report one way or the other but don’t copy/paste words from the web. All words have to be your own and out of your on heads. Ultimately, you want to know if anybody else is doing your solution or something similar to it. Second, do a patent search on keywords to see if anybody has a patent on your solution. This is a great way to do research but very few people know about it. Go to the US patent database at http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html. It doesn’t work in the Google Chrome browser so use any other browser. In the Field 1 section, select Abstract. Then, in Term 1 type in some terms that have to do with your solution, e.g. “advanced helicopter seat.” You’ll get a list of patents that include your terms, if any exist. Click on any patent. Take a look at the title, abstract, and assignee. That’s enough to determine if the patent is related to your solution. For fun, select Inventor Name in Field 1 and type in “Lewis, Lundy” in Term 1. You’ll see a list of your professor’s 37 patents. Select Assignee Name and type in Tesla and you see 530 patents owned by Tesla. Play with it and you’ll get the hang of it. It’s a nice tool that you can use to your advantage and impress people for the rest of your career. 

2. Research on Products  Do web research to see if products exist that realize your solution. This also requires basic web research on your part. List the products, a brief description, and a URL for each product.

3. Comparative evaluation of products   If there are multiple products that you could use for your solution, compare them along select dimensions. See if a comparative evaluation has been done already. You might want to compare products with respect to price, features, company stability, company reputation, number of customers, or other dimensions. 

4. Acquisition  Based on what you find in Steps 1, 2, & 3 above, make a decision whether your solution should be purchased, or purchased and modified, or purchased and integrated with other products, or built from scratch. For the proposals that involved starting a new business, here’s where you can justify starting it. For example, it might make good business sense to purchase several products, integrate them, and resell them. A risk, however, is that you would be dependent on other vendors such that if another vendor fails then you fail unless you have a fallback vendor (see Section 10). Another example is that you might decide to purchase a product, add value in some way, and then provide a service to customers. There are all sorts of possibilities so your job is to think it through and make a rational decision. It’s OK if your solution changes from what you proposed initially. In fact, that would be rational and good. 

5. Benefits   Describe the benefits of the solution you selected in #4. You would have mentioned some benefits in the Solution section of the proposal. It’s OK if those benefits change after further analysis.

6. Ethics Analysis   
Do the ethics analysis here. See the slides earlier in the course for guidance. I’ll see if I can find other good material on the topic that’s easy to digest.

7. Legal Analysis   
Do the legal analysis here. See if there are any laws or policies that govern the domain of your solution, e.g. healthcare, security, privacy, human rights, etc. You don’t want to find out too late that your solution is actually or potentially illegal. Also, if there is a patent on your solution, you possibly could be sued if you infringe upon the patent. That’s OK, but you would have to pay royalties to the owner of the patent.

8. Security and Privacy Analysis  Is there any way your solution could be hacked? Does your solution involve a collection of data that could be considered an invasion of privacy? Talk about these concerns here. 

9. Accessibility Analysis  This is something we haven’t talked about in class. This topic refers to people with disabilities being able to use your product or service, e.g. persons with a vision impairment, mobility impairment, cognitive impairment, or another type of impairment. In some domains there are laws that enforce a product to be accessible or at least have plans to be accessible to people with certain disabilities. 

10. Risks and Mitigations  List all possible risks and mitigations. Note that there could be some overlap here with your findings in the steps above. That’s OK and entirely rational. In fact it’s OK if there’s overlap in any of your findings for each step.

11. Deployment Strategy and Timeline  In the beginning of the course I used the phrase “Adoption Strategy” but I think a better phrase is “Deployment Strategy.” Here you’ll describe how your solution will be deployed to individuals in the business. See the slides in the beginning of the course. Provide a timeline in term of months if that makes sense for your project.

12.  An Estimate of Cost and Maintenance  Try to come up with an itemized ballpark figure. If your solution requires the purchase of an existing product, it should be easy to find a price. If you’re building a product from scratch, it’ll be more difficult.

13.  Prototype Demonstration  I’ve talked to several of you about this. Different projects will take different approaches to building a prototype. Just remember that it is by no means a final product. It’s something to show that suggests what your solution looks like and how it will be used. It’s a physical demonstration rather than a verbal description.
