Case study One

Vicki, a family welfare centre case worker sees Eric an 8-year-old boy for the first time with his parents. His parents described “hyperactive” behaviour and a propensity to get into trouble.

The meeting today was at the request of the family, to provide additional material support to the family. When Vicki meets with the family, she notes that Eric actually appears to be withdrawn and there was little eye contact between Eric and his parents and at times he appeared to physically shrink away from his father. Vicki does not see any evidence of hyperactive behaviour, Vicki does note several severe bruises on Eric’s arms and legs, which Eric’s mother states are a result of rough play. Family also state that they are in financial distress at the moment but hope that situation will change when Eric’s father finds a job soon. Vicki also becomes aware that the father lost his job due to drug use.

Case Study Two

She and Keith are of similar ages, and through conversations they have in their professional interactions; it seems that Laura and Keith share several interests.  In a professional meeting Laura discloses that she is attracted to Keith and it would be nice to see him in a social setting outside the community service agency and wants to get to know Keith better.

John has been to rehab clinics a few times and has recently relapsed. John is quite distressed about it. You have formed a close working relationship in which he was able to discuss his thoughts and feelings openly and with some degree of honesty. During a conversation with you John made the comment that ‘life wasn’t worth living’, that ‘it was all too much’ and ‘I’m shit, just a junkie. No one will miss me’.

When you tried to gently challenge this thinking, John discloses that he is planning to end his life soon. John request you to keep the information confidential.
