Assignment Task:

Assessment 1 (Ethnography Assessment)

This assessment contains several stages – please read the following instructions carefully.

Fieldwork and the writing of ethnography are key to the social science of music theory and debate. In this unit, you will have the opportunity to become a fledgling music researcher and explore a topic through first-hand, active research.

Usually, to complete this task, you would undertake your fieldwork in a music-centred site, such as a live music venue, club, pub or festival, or a community site, such as a shopping centre. Because of the COVID-19-related closures, cancellations and restrictions, this will, in most cases, not be possible. However, we can look at this as an opportunity to do interesting new research, rather than an obstacle. You may conduct your research in your household or neighbourhood, or you may choose to research an online community. The online community may be directly related to a closed pub or club, or a cancelled festival, or it might be any other online group whose members engage with popular music and with each other. The opportunity you have here is to produce original research in unique circumstances. You may explore what happens when a 'real life' community is forced to go online - or when existing online communities have to face new 'real life' challenges together. How do our changing circumstances affect what we do socially and musically?

The task is:

Choose a site or ‘field’, for example, an online community connected with a dance club/pub/other popular music performance venue, an online music fan community, an online music streaming event with viewer interaction, any online community whose members engage with music and each other, or your household or neighbourhood.

Having decided on a site, visit the ‘field’ (which may involve joining a social media group) and become a participant-observer; watch and ask questions of the individuals there. Listen to the music being played or shared and observe how it influences the ways people behave and interact with one another. Then, take notes on your observations. Writing down your observations is the first step towards creating ‘ethnography’, which literally means ‘writing about people’, with reference to your selected relevant literature and theoretical framework(s). Your observations should seek to probe questions such as:

  • How does the music influence what is taking place in front of you in your chosen ‘field’ site?
  • Does everyone in the chosen site behave in a similar way? Why or why not?
  • What aspects of the site and the social circumstances have a bearing on this?
