Quantitative Dataset Information

If you have chosen the quantitative assessment, you will be working with the Eurofound (2022)1 dataset which is based on the European Working Conditions Telephone Survey, 2021. The objective of the survey was to assess the working conditions of employed and self-employed workers across Europe. You can find further information about the survey and its methodology on the websites of Eurofound (European Working Conditions Surveys (EWCS) | Eurofound (europa.eu)) and UK Data Service (UK Data Service › Study).

Before you choose your hypotheses and analyse the data, we recommend that you read the following guidelines on measuring the quality of the working environment published by the OECD; particularly chapter 3 and 4: (oecd-ilibrary.org). This will help you to familiarise yourself with the literature on how the quality of the working environment might affect levels of engagement and burnout, and how to assess this with a survey.

As you will be working with a real and complex dataset, there are a few important things you need to consider before you proceed with your analyses.

First, you must ensure that you have completed the compulsory pre-requisite data agreement on Canvas.

Second, when you open the dataset in SPSS and are working with a newer version you might get a warning that it is running in Unicode encoding mode. If this is the case, click ‘Yes’ so SPSS can read the dataset.

Third, the dataset includes a large number of variables that are not relevant for your analysis. The following table will help you to find the relevant variables in the dataset. In the table you will also find comments that you will have to consider when analysing the data and writing-up your results.
