Abstract

Aim – To conduct a structured literature review on the attitudes, experiences and views of patients, carers and staff involved in sexual health interventions for adults with a learning disability. The result being a synthesis of the relevant studies forming a greater understanding of the impact of sexual healthcare for people with learning disabilities. The ultimate goal being to positively shape practice and promote a person centred, egalitarian approach to this type of intervention.

Background – People with learning disabilities suffer discrimination in all areas of life and their sexuality is no exception. There are recorded negative stereotypes amongst healthcare staff and carers towards sexual expression in this client group. While modern approaches do exist, it is unclear how effective they are, and how they are perceived by the staff delivering services, the carers supporting clients to them, and the patients themselves.

Methodology – A structured literature review will be carried out utilising a meta-ethnographic approach. This will source qualitative research and synthesise the data thematically, drawing comparisons and links between the works, to create better understanding of the intervention in question.

Method – To conduct this structured literature review, the author will undertake a documented, systematic search of several health focused databases, using MeSH terms where applicable before combining these results with key terms such as “learning disability” and “sexual health”. After screening the results using prescribed inclusion/exclusion criteria, the remaining articles will be critically appraised for quality using the CASP tool.
