Assessment 2 requires you to write a paper. This written paper comprises two parts. The first part requires you to analyse a range of academic and professional sources, including the ACMHN Standards of Practice (2010) and Scope of Practice (2013), related to the work of mental health nurses in delivering holistic, ethical, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and evidence-based care to diverse consumers, their families or carers, and the community.

The second part of the paper is a critical reflection on your practice as a registered nurse working in a mental health setting. You will also identify areas in need of your professional and practice development.

Task

• Introduce your paper, providing an outline of the content. This introduction must include an outline of the structure of the paper (i.e., the paper comprises two parts) and the aims of each part of the paper. NOTE: It is sometimes easier to write the introduction to your paper after you have completed it. (100 words)
• For Part 1 of the paper, you are to critique the work and scope of practice of mental health nurses, including the following:
  • Examine the work of mental health nurses in delivering holistic, ethical, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and evidence-based care to diverse consumers, their families or carers, and the community by answering the following questions:
    • What does it mean for mental health nurses to deliver holistic, ethical, culturally safe, recovery-oriented, and evidence-based care to diverse consumers, their families or carers, and the community? (300 words)
    • Compare, contrast, and critique the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Standards of Practice (2010) and the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2013). What differentiates the work of mental health nurses from other mental health professionals? Why is this distinctiveness important? (400 words)
    • What examples in professional sources or academic literature highlight the distinctive work of mental health nurses? (300 words)
• Using the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Scope of Practice (2013) and other academic and professional sources, appraise the scope of practice of mental health nurses as active multidisciplinary team members who build therapeutic relationships, conduct biopsychosocial assessments, co-develop recovery plans, support a range of evidence-based interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of the outcomes achieved. Include answers to the following questions:
• What is the scope of practice of mental health nurses? What is your scope of practice as a mental health nurse? (300 words)
• What special characteristics do mental health nurses bring to the processes of building therapeutic relationships, conducting biopsychosocial assessments, co-developing recovery plans, and supporting a range of evidence-based interventions? 
• How can mental health nurses evaluate the effectiveness of the outcomes they help to achieve?  For Part 2 of the paper, you are to identify examples in your practice and critically reflect on your practice as a mental health nurse, including:
• Identify and describe at least one practice scenario that demonstrates your distinctive work as a mental health nurse. Place the practice scenario(s) in a text box(es) and refer to the scenario(s) in the body of your paper (The word count for scenarios is not included in the overall appropriate word count. Recommended appropriate word count for each scenario  
• Critically reflect on each of your scenario(s) through the lens of the scope of practice of a mental health nurse by answering the following questions:
  • How did you evaluate the effectiveness of your work? 
  • What did you do well? What areas of your practice need development? 
  • How was your work different from those of other members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT)? 
• Develop and justify two (2) SMART goals, drawn from your critical reflection on your scope of practice, to support your professional/practice development (300 words). Note: SMART Goals are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. There are several resources and examples on the Internet for developing SMART Goal
• Write a conclusion to your paper describing at least one crucial lesson learned from this assessment
