Abstract—As a result of the probability solution of the condition that the ring stress is lower than the limit stress, the fourth-order algebraic equation for determining the expected value of the wall thickness for the case when the initial parameters are normally distributed has been obtained. The sensitivity of the reliability of an oil and gas pipeline to the variations in the pressure, strength limit, diameter, and wall thickness has been studied, which improved its operation safety.
The reliability and the operation safety of the main oil and gas pipelines largely depend on the stress– strain state of walls. Most pipeline accidents are failures caused by the destruction of pipe walls by the excess ring stress compared to the standard strength limit of pipe steel. The pulsation of the transported products leads to the dynamic loading of pipes, which decreases the mechanical properties of base metal and welds. Because of the long-term operation of oil and gas pipelines, the overstress of pipes leads to the sudden failures, which occur in random moments of time.
The existing deterministic methods for calculating pipelines are unsatisfactory from the point of view of reliability. The variability of the operating conditions of oil and gas pipelines of a large diameter and their great length make the loads, the metal strength characteristics, and the cross-sections random values.
Thus, even if the reserve factor is the same, the probability of pipe failure can vary in a wide range. This makes the reliability evaluation of pipeline walls by the probability methods necessary to decrease their accident rate. The necessity of this approach is substantiated.
