An analysis of the construction and built environment sector in relation to the evolution and application of management principles and its structures and activities. Scenario: You are employed as a management consultant by a company which operates in the construction and built environment sector. The company employees a number of trainee managers whom it wishes to familiarise with the manner in which the company operates. They have therefore sought your advice in this respect. You are required to select a company operating in the construction and built environment sector, either one which you have worked for or one which you have researched, and write a report explaining both the manner in which it is managed and structured together with the theoretical base which underpins these issues. Your written report should include an introduction at the beginning and a conclusion at the end, together with a bibliography in the Harvard referencing format. Make sure that you write your name on the report and number all pages. Your report should be structured as follows: a. An introduction, which includes a brief explanation of the importance of a business operating in the construction and built environment being well managed and structured. b. An explanation of the principles of management and their application to your chosen organisation. You should also include references to the views of some of the pioneers of management. c. An explanation of the influence of human resources management on the performance of individuals and teams with regard to leadership, motivation and behaviour as applied to your chosen organisation. Your answer should include some of the theories of motivation. d. An account of the structures and activities of the constructions and built environment sector. You should include reference to the nature of services provided by each sector, the general roles and responsibilities of members of project teams, and the specific roles and responsibilities of professionals within project teams. e. An evaluation of the organisational structures and approaches used in your chosen organization. You should include reference to the various types of working relationships (e.g. line, lateral, span of control, etc.) and some of the corporate theories (e.g. mission, strategy, etc.). f. A discussion on some of the different contractual methods employed within the construction and built environment sector and how the scale and size of a particular contract will influence the method to be adopted. You should also include reference to the roles of the relevant parties. A good answer will compare some of the benefits and drawbacks of each contractual method. (M1) g. A conclusion to the report which summarises your learning and provides a critical evaluation of how your chosen organisation is structured and managed. Excellent conclusions have well justified points.
