Highlights
Task
1.Introduction
Provide background into the rest of the document and the information to be presented. What is the purpose of the information, what will it be applied to? Remember that your target audience is your client – Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation – what do they need to know, what do they already know?
This document is only a suggested template for your EWB Challenge draft of the first sections of your final report, you do not need to strictly adhere to the suggested structure or content. Remember to write in third person only for academic writing and professional engineering documentation. If you are unsure of how to structure your proposal or need help - see the list of resources in the assessment requirements document on Canvas.
In general, to help guide your research and how to communicate clearly, research and present broad general information first, before diving into detail i.e., go from broad narrow detail. This helps to structure your information, and also helps the reader to follow and understand your work.
1.1.EWB Challenge Design Project Opportunity
This section relates to the ‘define’ stage of the design process stage. Clearly identify:
• Which Design Area and Project Opportunity (Topic) within the EWB Challenge Design Brief has your group selected?
• What is your “How might we…” problem statement?
• What is the scope of your project i.e., what will your design solution address and what will it not address?
2.Background
This section relates to the ‘discovery’ and ‘empathy’ stages of the design process. Summarise the most relevant background information, research, and empathising related to your group’s EWB Challenge Design Area and Design Project Opportunity.
3.Design solution options
This section relates to the ‘ideate’ stage of the design process stage. Present and briefly explain each of your design criteria and the 3 design options that your group came up with during the ideation stage – doing nothing is an solution option but does not count towards your 3 required options. Use figures to explain how the design works if relevant, but make sure that each figure is numbered and has a caption, and that you explain it in your paragraph text. Cite images that aren’t yours!
Remember that we do not expect that your group invents a new idea, it is ok to take existing solutions and adapt to the client/community context (‘value-add’). But it is definitely not enough to just use an existing solution! Each alternative design solution should have at least one reference source, unless your group invented the idea.
4.Proposed Design Solution
This section relates to the ‘screen’ stage of the design process stage. Justify the selection of ONE design solution from the 3 design options to be developed by your group for the rest of the semester. Your group’s decision must be justified e.g., using decision-making techniques such as the decision matrix and applying your design criteria. You must explain your decision matrix, the rating scale you chose, and justify the rating for each alternative design solution.
It should be clear at the end of this section what design solution your group intends to develop in detail for the rest of semester.
