Response to Covid-19 Disruptions

Due to current disruptions to the academic year, and the likely reality that field and laboratory access will be extremely stressful and perhaps impossible for many students, even in the event that some academic activities are able to resume later in the year, staff in EWS have collectively decided to act to change the structure of the EWP705 research project module. One of the ‘Main Outcomes’ for EWP705, as reflected in the module descriptor on pages 498-499 of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Calendar (Part 2), allows for the submission of a: “...full research proposal on a suitable topic that may enable him/her to continue directly with a Master’s study on completion of the Honours programme”.

Assessment in EWP705 will therefore be in the form of a full research proposal only. No data collection or presentation of original data, other than that required for physiographic context (e.g. rainfall data in a study area section), should be presented in the EWP705 proposal. All students will be required to follow the basic guidance in this module guide to prepare a proposal, with the assistance of project specific guidance from their academic supervisors.

Caveats

1. Preparation of a proposal as provided for in the module descriptor does not guarantee progression to Master’s Study, but simply indicates the academic level of the product required.

Progression to Master’s requires

 i) the achievement of minimum mark requirements,

ii) identification of a suitable and willing supervisor, and

iii) evidence of funding to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and research expenses as identified by the supervisor.

2. A template proposal format and standard set of assessment criteria are provided in this module guide. However, the research process allows for a diversity of approaches to proposal development, and you should follow an approach that is negotiated between you and your supervisor, but that is broadly consistent with the template provided.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria reflect the ultimate goals of a research proposal, which are to:

• Convince an informed readership of the scientific and / or environmental (ecological/social/economic/political) significance of your research, in an introduction that captures the reader’s imagination, and sets out the contextual background, the scientific rationale (with reference to key literature), the problem statement, and the aim and objectives;

• Present an idea that is feasible and achievable with available resources (supervisor guidance is recommended here). One overarching aim, and two to three specific objectives is sufficient.

• Present an authoritative, well-referenced, critical synthesis of the literature informing your research subject. Elaborate on key concepts and ideas in the discipline, using conceptual schematic diagrams where appropriate. As a guide, a good proposal at this level will have 30 – 50 references. Do not add meaningless citations and strings of references, for the sake of increasing your reference list – the work cited must be highly relevant to your project, and the context of citation must be appropriate to the theme of a sentence/paragraph/idea/concept. It must be emphasised that a critical synthesis is required, not simply a statement of previous studies on the topic. The review must identify and define gaps in knowledge about the topic of the proposal. What are the shortfalls in knowledge – do they relate to a lack of suitable methods of investigation, limited work in a particular type of environment, limited transferability of current ideas beyond case studies, limited opportunity or ability to observe a phenomenon of interest...?
