Examining Parent-Child Interaction through Transcript Analysis

Assignment Task

For this assignment you will be either creating a transcript of your own based on parent-child interactions OR use the transcript that was handed out last week. Recall that you would be using snippets from either one of these transcripts.

Goals of the Assignment: To analyse the transcript snippets in order to examine one or more of the following:

1. Actions in talk. What are the child and parenting doing with their utterances. For example, "Come and play" acts as a bid for interaction but it also acts as a direct request and the response is likely to be a silent obeyance or a yes/no response. An alternative might be, 'Lets play a game together' which is also a request but uses an indirect approach which may prompt a response such as, Let's play ...." which is a bid for interaction.

2. Along with actions you can also identify sequences of talk that construct identity-parent, child, gender, attachment styles.
