Highlights
Task:
These underserved populations include the uninsured, underinsured and the working poor. In order to reach the goal, resources should be utilized to provide intense community education about the extendednontraditional hours and the comprehensive services provided by the health centers. In addition, these health care centers should provide services during extended and weekend hours. The federally qualified health centers should have onsite screening, laboratory, and full-service pharmacy services.

Overutilization of Emergency Departments

According to Young (2018), the overutilization of Emergency Departments can lead to excessive health care costs and poor quality of care. The care provided by the nation's emergency departments is much more expensive than primary care services. Emergency departments are staffed by specially trained individuals. Uninsured and underinsured individuals have demonstrated the greatest use of emergency departments, as compared with privately insured patients (Young, 2018). Regulatory agencies have contributed to this phenomenon, as it is required that no one be turned away without a proper medical assessment. Services are guaranteed, regardless of the severity of the presenting symptoms or the patient's ability to pay. Unfortunately, this practice contributes to a reduced quality of care for these individuals. They experience extremely long wait times and there is no continuity of care. Emergency department staff must refer the patients to primary care or specialists for follow up care. It is my opinion that government needs to focus on increasing the use of federally qualified health centers throughout the country. Federally qualified health centers are focused on providing comprehensive primary care to underserved populations.
