Assignment Task

Description

The data are from a clinical trial testing the effect of a synthetic luteinizing hormone (LH, variable TX in the data) applied after the removal of an intra-vaginal progesterone releasing device (PRID). The control in this trial was no treatment. Anestrous cows were pre-selected on the basis of non-observed estrus following 21-28 days of tail-paint application prior to plain start of mating. They were allocated randomly to treatment or control within herd. The outcome variables are the time from treatment to conception, the first service conception rate and, most importantly, the proportion of cows that were in-calf by 28 days after treatment (IC28d). Age, body condition at treatment (BCS), herd size and the time from calving to treatment were considered to be important confounders or effect modifiers.

Task

Perform an exploratory analysis (without hypothesis testing): Formulate a working hypothesis of interest and identify and describe the outcome variables, the variable(s) of interest and potential confounding/interaction variables; summarise descriptive results; interpret your findings.
