Highlights
STATE Personal Tech Philosophy’ requires you to write a short but powerful article on technology - something about the evolving relationship between technology and humans - a relationship which defines our history, our present and our future. You are being asked to articulate and present your learned opinion and standpoint here - whatever that may be.
And in doing so encouraged to validate and value your own experience against the philosophy, theory, practice and applications of technology in our lives. You are being encouraged to test your opinion and to make yourself heard. And yes you are being given freedom here - to write about something that interests you - the only restriction is that it be somehow focused on technology. Don't run from that. Embrace it.
Keep This In Mind
Has there been anything in the lecture series and our discussions so far that has interested you - that evoked some emotion within you – that sparked your imagination in some way - that aligned well (or totally opposed) with how you see technology and its impact? If so then write about that for your written piece.
This assignment requires you to reflect critically on what technology means to you and how you view its impact.
And then you need to write a short but powerful article - about this impact - which is this evolving relationship between technology and humans - this relationship - which defines our history, our present and our future. You are being asked to articulate and present your opinion and standpoint here - whatever that may be. In doing so encouraged to validate and value your own experience against the philosophy, theory, practice and applications of technology in our lives. At it's core you are being encouraged to test your opinion and make yourself heard.
The only restriction being placed on your writing is that it be focussed on technology in some way. Outside of that you are free to express yourselves as you wish.
Throughout the lecture series we have focussed on technology in a very broad manner and also in very specific manner citing lots of different circumstances. A lot of the times we talked about the pervasive impact the internet as a technology has had on business, on us as individuals, and on us as the collective whole as a society. On a regular basis I kept trying to provoke your opinion on the advent and offering up of the internet for mass public consumption, society’s ubiquitous subscription of the resultant technologically converged global village, and how this has forever altered the way humanity and business function. We routinely discuss questions such as …
whether technology is an inherent component of human evolution and therefore, simply “the medium in which we play this infinite game” (Kelly, 2005), whether technology is currently leading humanity down a path where “the creative becomes subservient to the structure of giant computers”, “human expression becomes a peasant activity” (Lanier, 2013), and one that will ultimately “cheat us of being in touch deeply with those breathing right next to us” (Nin, 1951) …
You are also just asked to acknowledge these types of viewpoints whilst positioning yourself somewhere else. In terms of this assignment the choice of what you want to focus on here is entirely yours. As long as it has a strong focus on technology, humanity, and business and you leverage some of the key ideas we have been talking about in the lectures in your written piece somewhere.
You are being provided freedom to express your own viewpoint here guys. It is a rare thing. Embrace it. Do not run from it.
What You Should Write About?
Throughout the lecture series I have routinely asked you to grab hold of something. Follow up on something in that lecture series that sparked your interest - something that may support your own personal viewpoint on technology or even go against it. I have exposed you to multiple key players and their specific ideas.
You do not have to write something that covers everything we have talked about. I want you to write about a topic or an idea that you feel strongly about.
And below are just a tiny selection of potential topics and angles …
You may wish to express your standpoint on technology using just social media as the focus.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology and its impact on business alone.
You may wish to express your standpoint on technology focussing on its impact of the self-identity and a sense of self.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology as an inherent component of human evolution.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology using focussing on risk – on the trade-off between convenience and privacy.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology as an unstoppable dehumanising force.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology from the angle that it will lead us toward some technologically driven utopia.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology focussing in on the idea that it has made us smarter – that it has extended our minds.
You may wish to express your viewpoint on technology from the angle that it will destroy us all – go so far as to say that it poses an ‘existential risk’ – a risk to our continued existence as a species.
The options are endless guys …
The key thing to note here is that you could quite easily say what you want to say using just one specific aspect of one specific lecture or discussion. Or you could weave together a story from different parts of different lectures and discussions. Remember the lectures often have overlapping ideas. So again the options are endless. It is entirely up to you.
I have told you a lot of things throughout the lecture series so far. Some will ring true for you. Some will not. So write whatever you want to write. Tell me where you stand guys. Where does the truth lie for you?
