The aim of this study is to determine and rank the reasons why construction workers in Singapore have low voluntary usage of hearing protectors at construction sites. Another associated aim is to assess how they perceive the safety and health risks associated with occupational noise. The research objectives are as follows:
1) To assess self-reported safety and health risks to construction workers due to occupational noise
2) To ascertain the extent of voluntary hearing protector usage in construction sites
3) To identify and rank factors associated with low level of hearing protector usage in construction sites

Literature Review

High noise level in construction sites is a major health concern for construction workers. Evidence from different countries has established a clear link between noise exposure and hearing damage (Hong, 2005; Leensen, Duivenbooden, & Dreschler, 2011; Seixas, et al., 2012). Hong (2005) found that hearing loss and rate of hearing loss among American construction workers was high and depended upon their number of years in the industry and usage of hearing protectors. According to Seixas et al. (2012), workers exposed to above average noise levels of 85 dBA suffered significant hearing damage. They found that peak noise levels have limited effect on hearing loss and average noise levels are better predictors of hearing loss among construction workers.

Rationale

Workers in construction industry are exposed to extremely high noise levels (Leensen, Duivenbooden, & Dreschler, 2011). Still, many workplaces have not made use of hearing protectors compulsory in all activities. The author wants to study whether workers perceive occupational noise to be safety and health risk. Also, the author wants to assess the extent of voluntary hearing protector usage and what are the barriers to its optimum usage in construction sites. This will be useful to decide whether regulatory action is needed to reduce workers’ risk of occupation noise.
