Aim

This assignment has 2 aims. First, to familiarise students with the design, documentation and installation of insulation, fenestration and internal and external roof, wall and floor finishes for conventional Australian domestic construction and to adapt them to the structure developed in the first 5 weeks of semester through the production of large scale construction details. Large scale details include the connections of fenestration/walls/floor fenestration/walls/ceiling/roof, fenestration/interior/exterior walls. These are to demonstrate that the building’s skin will be weatherproof. Interior architecture students will have specific outputs that cater to their disciplines, including large scale interior elevations of wet areas and details that show the interface of joinery to the building floors, walls and ceiling.

Second, to familiarise students with complying to the NCC and selected AS for glazing, and the development of construction documentation drawings according to AS 1100.301 Technical Drawing Architectural Drawing. Plan, sections, elevations and large-scale details are to be produced with the other content developed in this and previous assignments.

The semester’s remaining lectures and Assignments 1d 1g will provide the content and approaches required to complete Assignment 3.

1. Cladding (and finishes)

Select cladding and finishes for the roof, ceiling, walls and floor as required in the attached Insulation and Finishes Schedule and record your choices in that Schedule.

  • Use the workflow outlined in Assignment 1d for this
  • Select only from the List of Allowable Finishes and Insulation attached to this handout.
  • The manufacturer and model of each finish and insulation is not required for this assignment but lists of these are included in the Canvas Modules for your information.

2. Fenestration

Using the information from the lectures and the references, design all of the door and window configurations in you issued house plans according to the following requirements:

  • Use the workflow outlined in Assignment 1e for this
  • Except for the 1 front door, all external doors must have glazing within 500mm of the floor level
  • Use double glazing throughout
  • Use the provided thermally broken aluminium glazed door and window system and its frame and sash dimensions) throughout the house from the list below. Do not use other framing systems.
  • Use the opening sizes and locations in your assigned house plan.
  • Fixed window panes are allowed but all windows must have at least 1 opening sash in its configuration.
  • Design your door and window configurations according to the size limitations outlined in the lectures
  • Record your designs in a Door and Window Schedule outlined in this assignment’s Deliverables

3. Insulation

Select insulation for the roof, ceiling, walls and floor as required in the attached Insulation and Finishes Schedule and record your choices in that Schedule.

  • Use the workflow outlined in Assignment 1d for this
  • Select insulation layers to achieve the R-values required on the Schedule
  • Note that cladding and finishes also have R-values, provide these on the Schedule also
  • Select only from the List of Allowable Finishes and Insulation attached to this handout.
  • The manufacturer and model of each insulation system selected is not required for this assignment but lists of these are included in the Canvas Modules for your information.

4. Regulatory Aspects

The regulatory aspects of glazing are to be explored through this assignment. ascertain the regulatory requirements for the glazing in your design according to the NCC and AS 1288 – Glass in Buildings:

  • Use the workflow outlined in Assignment 1e for this
  • Based on the location and height of glass from the finished floor level, determine whether safety glass is required for all doors and windows of your assigned house design
  • Determine the type of safety glass required
  • Calculate the thickness of safety glass required
  • All door and window glazing to be double glazed, so both panes are to be the same type of glass
  • Record your calculations in a Door and Window Schedule outlined in this assignment’s Deliverables

5. Detailing and Documentation This assignment is based on the issued house designs. Do the following:

Use your structure and masonry from Assignments 1a-1d such masonry, cavity and timber member sizes for trusses, rafters, walls and reinforced concrete floors as the basis for this exercise.

Use the updated plans elevations and sections in your issued sketch designs to produce a coordinated set of documentation drawings and schedules (according to AS 1100.301) required by the Deliverables below.

  • Use the dimensions provided in the updated plans and sections to produce your plans and sections.
  • Use black lines only
  • Follow the instructions given in the lecture on the requirements of AS 1100.301, especially in terms of required line types, line thicknesses, dimensions, room naming conventions, hatches, coding and crossreferencing
  • As part of the documentation drawings, provide large scale detail drawings (as required by the Deliverables below) that describe the connections between elements
  • Use the workflow outlined in Assignment 1f and 1g for detailing
  • Your details should demonstrate how different elements (and the connections between them) have been detailed to be weatherproof
  • The roof, wall and floor types are to be coded from the Insulation and Finishes Schedule.
