Family and Psychosocial Functioning in Bipolar Disorder

My mother's brother, my uncle, experienced another episode around six years ago. He has bipolar disorder. Allow me to briefly introduce my uncle to you. He is our most beloved uncle because he has the most beautiful spirit ever. However, we find it difficult to be around him while he is having these episodes because we honestly enjoy spending time with him. However, the episode he had that time was different. I recall him being quite aggressive. We are all close in touch to one another as a family. My mom receives a call from my uncle's wife on Friday when we are travelling to my grandma's house. All we could hear was, "Help me, he's going crazy in front of his kids," and it sounded like she was in pain rather than just sobbing. When we arrived, I followed my mother and older brother without realising what I was going to see because I was a little child. It was the first time I had ever seen someone act so aggressively, even though he usually acts that way during his episodes. I witnessed my uncle choking his wife in front of his boys, ages three and six. Now that I'm telling this story, all I can remember is the horrified expressions on his children's faces while his wife was having trouble breathing. My brother and mother did everything they could to calm him. They tried talking to him first, but it wasn't very effective. He took a knife, gripped my brother, and yelled at my mother, "If you don't leave me alone, I'll kill him." My body felt extremely cold, like if my feet were imprisoned. Our maid came running in and helped me get back to the car. A few years later, out of curiosity, I made the decision to discuss him with my mother. I was curious about what it was like to have a bipolar brother as a child. She had plenty of stories to tell me. She told me that she used to take his car keys away from him because, during their teenage years, he had an incident when he stole his dad's car and disappeared, leaving him missing for a week. I truly want to know if he has bipolar disorder because of the genes from my mother's side, because two of my cousins from her other brother also have the disorder. or is it that my uncle saw his sister commit suicide? So, is it inherited or not?
