Review the below material and watch the video clip of the interview (Case 1) presented via the Blackboard interface, with the purpose of responding to the following questions in a question and answer format. Refer to the rubric for more information on what to include in your responses and ensure you link your responses to the unit material.
1. What is the main change goal? Whose goal is it?
2. Using the transtheoretical model, what stage of change is the offender in and why do you think this?
3. Identify the factors that either undermined his change process or were absent (i.e. protective factors) the first few attempts he made to restrict his alcohol use. Discuss why you think these factors were relevant.
4. Identify the factors (those present and absent) that supported and maintained the offenders change process and discuss why these are relevant.
5. If you were working with Jason, how would you use the working alliance (bond, goals, tasks) to increase the likelihood of success during his most recent change attempt?

Background
Jason is 27 years old. He was born in an outer suburb of Melbourne and is the youngest of four children. He was raised by his biological parents, who remain married. His father was a mechanic and owned his own business. He worked long hours. His mother was the primary caregiver, and worked full time in the home until Jason was 10 years. At 10 years his mother returned to the workforce in a casual position at Coles, due to financial pressure in the context of his father’s failing business.
Jason describes his relationship with his father as ‘not close’. His father was often absent from the family home, either at work or drinking with his friends at the local pub. When he was home, Jason described him as stressed, angry, critical of him and on occasion physically abusive towards him. He described a close relationship with his mother until he was around 13 years. He stated that his mother was warm and caring towards him. At around 13 years, she started to work longer hours and was away from the family home more often. He described competitive and conflictual relationships with his three older brothers. They are each two years apart. He recollected that they competed for everything: attention from their father; affection from their mother; sports; school etc. Jason reflected that he was always the weakest and was picked on a lot from his brothers, both verbally and physically.
Jason recollected that in primary school years he spent his spare time riding his bike with kids on the street, playing his x-box and watching TV. Jason reported that things became more difficult for him in high school. He found the transition to high school difficult. He found it difficult to cope with the school work and to make friends. He often went home to an empty house as both parents were working and two of his brothers had moved out of home. He was often bored after school, and although he found it difficult to admit, lonely too. Rather than going home to an empty house, he started hanging out at the local shops, where neighbourhood boys of a similar age hung out. These boys were known to be trouble, but they relieved him of his boredom, accepted him and made him feel good about himself. He joined them when they would go ‘thrill-seeking’, which often involved smashing up bus stops, drawing graffiti on property, smashing windows and stealing from shops. He enjoyed the adrenaline rush and sense of camaraderie. On the evenings when his mother worked, he would also meet with his friends and drink alcohol. He stole the money from his mother’s purse. She didn’t seem to notice $10 go missing here and there.
