Task:
Instructions:
Choose ONE of the following topics to write a comparative essay of 600 – 750 words. You will be assessed according to a rubric (please see p3). Copies of all the relevant poems are in the Term 1 Poetry Reader (available on Blackboard).
1. Lebohang Mashile’s “Tomorrow’s Daughters” and Wilfred Owen’s “Anthem for a doomed youth” are clarion calls that signal their speakers’ disaffection with the status quo. Write a critical analysis of the two poems in which you compare and contrast the poems’ themes and the poetic devices that are used to convey this dissatisfaction.
OR
2. “they say” by Peter Clarke and “The Actual Dialogue” by Mongane Wally Serote were written by poets who wanted to convey their unease with the conditions they find themselves in as subjugated beings under Apartheid. Write an essay in which you critically analyse these two poems by comparing and contrasting their themes and the poetic devices used that so effectively convey their agitation. Some questions to guide your writing:
Planning:
Have I made use of brainstorming or mind-mapping techniques to plan my essay? (Do not submit with your assignment)
Structure:
Does my essay have a title? (A title should be interesting and entice the reader to read what follows.
Does my introduction identify my primary text, have a thesis statement, and state your aims? (see page 4)
Is the body of my essay divided into paragraphs that begin with topic sentences that indicate the particular focus of the paragraph? (Each paragraph should focus on one aspect of the argument you are putting forth and should be a clear substantiation of your thesis statement.)
Does my essay end with a concluding paragraph that sums up what it is I have been endeavoring to argue?
Content:
Do I substantiate the thesis statement (argument) given in my introduction?
Do I compare and contrast the poems to substantiate my argument?
Do I substantiate my claims with evidence from the poems? (please reference with line numbers )
Editing:
Have I written more than one draft of my essay and edited it in order to eliminate as many grammatical errors and typos? (Do not submit drafts with your assignment)
Presentation:
Your essay needs to be marker-friendly!
Your essay will be printed out to mark, so the first page MUST be the cover page (it is fine if this is numbered as page 1) and page numbers.
Please see page 4 for a template of what your cover page should look like.
Please do NOT put borders around your pages as this makes it difficult to write comments.
Please use 1.5cm line spacing to allow space for comments.
Note on Objective Language:
Objective (impartial) language is very important in academic writing. You need to convince your reader that you have come to your conclusion after careful and objective analysis.
You may use “I” in your essay, e.g. “In this I essay shall compare…”
Avoid using the universal “we”(e.g. “As we can see…”) You are not the queen of England, nor do you know what your intended reader can or can’t see.
Avoid subjective statements like “I feel”.
Avoid value judgements (e.g. “the poem is good” or “I loved this poem”). You are required to write an academic essay, not a review.
Avoid saying what the poems “meant” to you; that is not the purpose of an academic essay.
Refer to the poet by their full names or surnames, not by their names only.
Use formal, standard English, and avoid colloquialisms (ain’t, gonna, he done, etc.) and conversational interjections (“Well, in this poem…”, “So, as we can see…”)
