You work for a fencing-specialised construction company. Your company has been hired by a developer to construct a new 2 m high steel fence. You are responsible for managing the following elements of the fence:
(1) Concrete foundations and short columns at 5 m distance
(2) Steel columns and Galvanised steel mesh in-between.
Figure 1 shows a typical view of the fence. Figure 2 is a plan view of the area.

You have two construction crews:
• Crew 1 will do the excavation and will construct the foundations and short columns. This crew will consist of two labourers and an excavator (including operator). They will carry out the following:
o Excavation - There is approximately 6 m3 of excavation required per foundation. The excavated soil will be removed and stockpiled close to the fence. The crew can excavate up to 50 m3 per hour
o Foundation – Each 10 foundations take the following time to be constructed.
 3 days for plain concrete footing
 6 days for reinforced concrete footing
 3 days for short column
 For each concrete element, minimum 3 days curing should be maintained before starting the new element.

o Reinstatement – After the 3 days curing time for short columns, the crew will reinstate the area around the foundation. The same excavator is to be used for reinstatement.
o Soil removal – after reinstatement, the extra soil should be removed from site to be dumped in landfills. Two options for truck size are available for this task including 3 m3 or 7 m3. The same excavator to be used to load the haul trucks with excavated soil.

• Crew 2 will install the steel columns and galvanised mesh. The crew consists of one labourer, one steel fixer, and a small crane truck (including operator).
They will carry out the following:
o Steel column erection – Each 10 columns take 1 day to be erected.
o Galvanised steel mesh fixation – The crew can fix up to 50 m a day.

Other information required for the calculation of durations and cost are to be found online or from industry practitioners. You need to state where you obtained these figures in your calculations. Make reasonable assumptions for any other information that may be required and remember to note these assumptions in your calculations. Working hours are 8 am to 6 pm from Monday to Friday with 30 minute breaks in the morning and afternoon and a 1 hour lunch break. It will take 2 days to establish onsite at the beginning of the project and 2 days to disestablish at the end.

For this assessment you need to:
1. Develop the work breakdown structure for the project.
2. Calculate the durations and produce a program for your part of the project.
You will need to determine the sequence so that the project is completed as efficiently as possible including the use of lead and lag as appropriate. You should consider a good solution for haul trucks size and number.

3. Produce a Budget and Cash Flow (by week) for the project.
