Case Study - Reading to Learners
Sam is a Grade 1 teacher at an Afrikaans primary school. In the Afrikaans Home Language class, he reads Gouelokkies en die Drie Bere (Goldilocks and the Three Bears) to his learners. In the English First Additional Language class, he reads the South African retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Rhinos to his class.
1. Harris and Hodges (1996, p. 227) define schema theory as a view that “comprehension depends on integrating new knowledge with a network of prior knowledge”.
In your own words, explain your understanding of the schema theory (5 marks) and how Sam can apply the theory when he reads this storybook to learners (3 marks). Remember to present your answer in full sentences.
2. Critically analyse Pearson and Fielding’s (1991, p. 849) definition of scaffolding below. Based on their definition, explain your understanding of the definition (2 marks) and then explain in your own words what scaffolding is (3 marks). Remember to present your answer in full sentences.

Before completing this task, read Unit 1, The Study and Analysis of English Literature, including Prose, Poetry and Children’s Literature, Section 3: English Children’s Literature, in your F-FLE 221 CLG . Then, examine Case Study 2 below, and complete the following tasks.
1. Genres are different types of stories for children. Examine the front cover of My Adventures with Beanie Bear, and the extract of Beanie Bear attended Career Day. Use your knowledge of Storybook Genres in English to evaluate which two genres are most suitable for this storybook and motivate your choice of genres. Remember to present your answer in full.
2. QAR is a system of classifying questions and refers to Question-Answer- Relationships. Formulate a set of QAR questions you could ask a Grade 1 learner to ensure that they understand Beanie Bear attended Career Day (4 marks) and refer to the type of QAR question used.

Before completing this task, read Unit 1, The study and analysis of English Literature, including prose, poetry and children’s literature, Section 2: English poetry, in your F-FLE 221 CLG . Then, examine Table 1 below, and complete the following tasks.
1. My Adventures with Beanie Bear is originally designed for an individual child in a home setting. Refer to the titles in Block A and construct your own eight (8) ideas of how each of these stories could be applied to a classroom setting .
2. As a teacher, it is important to always adhere to the Copyright Act of South Africa. This can be a challenge due to a lack of resources. Your school provides you with only one copy of My Adventures with Beanie Bear . Use Block B and C to create a five-step system to ensure the reward chart that is included in the storybook of My Adventures with Beanie Bear (as seen in Block B and C) can be used in a classroom setting for the class as a whole . Please ensure that the steps are well structured and can be followed logically
