Supply chains today operate under increasing pressure to deliver transparency, responsiveness, and efficiency, especially in the digital era. Once considered optional, supply chain visibility (SCV) has become a strategic requirement for organisations worldwide. SCV refers to “the extent to which actors within the supply chain have access to timely and accurate demand and supply information” (Kalaiarasan et al., 2022). High levels of visibility help improve customer satisfaction, support accurate demand forecasting, optimise inventory control, and aid in early detection of supply disruptions. However, these arguments require support from the literature to validate the significance of SCV.
Historically, departments such as manufacturing, logistics, and procurement operated in silos with limited data sharing or real-time information flow (Agbelusi et al., 2024). This lack of integration produced inefficiencies such as overstocking, understocking, production delays, and increased response time to market fluctuations. These weaknesses became more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed major gaps in supply chain visibility and resilience. Patel (2025) emphasised the urgent need for adopting digital technologies to build more transparent, agile, and resilient supply chains.
Digital technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digital twins have introduced new opportunities for SCV enhancement. These technologies provide real-time data, improve coordination, and strengthen end-to-end visibility (Lahri et al., 2024). Blockchain offers tamper-proof, transparent records (Sophia Ezeh et al., 2024), while IoT devices generate real-time tracking data across supply chain touchpoints. However, references must be used consistently to support these claims.
Despite the significant benefits, organisations particularly SMEs continue to face major challenges such as high implementation costs, lack of skilled labour, data security concerns, and overall technological capability barriers (Ogunwole et al., 2024). These barriers highlight the need for research that evaluates both the advantages and practical limitations of digital SCV solutions.
To ensure a manageable scope for this 5,000-word project, this research will focus on supply chain visibility within the manufacturing and retail sectors, where visibility issues tend to be most severe due to complex supplier networks and volatile consumer demand patterns.
The purpose of this project is to explore how digital technologies can enhance SCV and strengthen supply chain effectiveness. By analysing the advantages, challenges, and practical applications of digital SCV tools, this research aims to contribute to digital supply chain management literature and provide meaningful recommendations for industry stakeholders.
Many organisations continue to operate with limited transparency and fragmented systems across their supply chain networks, despite the recognised importance of supply chain visibility (SCV) for operational efficiency and resilience. Low visibility leads to issues such as delivery delays, unpredictable lead times, poor information sharing, increased operational costs, and excessive inventory accumulation (Kalaiarasan et al., 2023). These challenges become more severe during disruptions such as COVID-19, where poor visibility magnified operational weaknesses, resource strain, reduced productivity, and significant financial losses.
A core challenge stems from siloed operations between manufacturers, suppliers, logistics partners, inventory teams, and retailers. These silo structures impede the smooth flow of information, reducing the ability to respond quickly to demand changes or supply interruptions (Barratt & Oke, 2007). Although digital technologies (IoT, AI, blockchain) offer strong potential to solve visibility gaps, real-world implementation is associated with high costs, limited skilled labour, cybersecurity risks, and technological constraints especially for SMEs.
These issues reveal a gap between the theoretical benefits of digital technologies and the practical experience of supply chain stakeholders. Therefore, this research project aims to investigate how digital technologies can enhance supply chain visibility, what factors hinder adoption, and how organisations can strategically address visibility gaps.
This final research project requires students to revise Assignments 1, 2, and 3 based on lecturer feedback and consolidate them into a complete, academically structured report. The report must contain:
1. Executive Summary – Overview of aims, methods, findings, and implications.
2. Chapter 1: Introduction – Background of the transport-related research topic, problem identification, research questions, and research objectives.
3. Chapter 2: Literature Review – A critical, integrated review of academic literature relevant to the research problem.
4. Chapter 3: Research Methods – Explanation and justification of research strategy, sampling approach, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques.
5. Chapter 4: Data Analysis and Findings – Description of the data set and detailed analysis of results.
6. Chapter 5: Implications and Conclusion – Discussion of implications for practice, study limitations, and recommendations for future research.
7. References – Minimum of 30 credible academic sources.
8. Appendices – Supporting documents such as datasets, instruments, calculations (not counted in word limit).
