Background

The COVID-19 pandemic (‘the pandemic’) has created widespread exogenous shocks affecting human populations across the globe as well as supply and distribution channels, economic systems, global financial markets, financial instruments and institutions. It has created widespread demand and supply shocks disrupting the financial intermediation function performed by approved depository institutions (ADIs). Such disturbances create direct and indirect influences on a multitude of economic agents and stakeholders in an economy. Task Examine how the financial intermediation function performed by the four major Australian banks (ANZ Bank, Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac Bank - referred to as ‘the sample banks’) has been affected by the pandemic. Write a critical and in-depth report analysing the changes in the financial intermediation function of the sample banks (i.e., changes in the loan and deposit portfolios and their compositions) during the period of March 2019 to March 2021 (‘the sample period’). Data The monthly data file for the sample period can be downloaded from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s (APRA) website and is also available from the following link: APRA March 2019 – March 2021 Data Set. Please note this file contains (in the ‘Table 1’ Tab) all ADIs in Australia. Students are, therefore, required to create their own ‘working data file’ containing only the sample banks' data over the sample period for analysis. Report content The assessment report must cover the following:

1. Define and briefly describe the financial intermediation function performed by banks.

2. Discuss briefly the benefits of loan portfolio diversification and deposit portfolio diversification to a bank.

3. Evaluate the monthly changes in the total loan portfolio value and the total deposit portfolio value of sample banks during the pandemic-affected period (March 2020–March 2021) in comparison to the pre-pandemic period (March 2019–February 2020).

4. Critically analyse and evaluate how the composition of sample banks’ loan portfolios has changed during the pandemic-affected period (March 2020–March 2021) in comparison to the pre-pandemic period (March 2019–February 2020). The composition of sample 01:17 12/07/2021 Assessment Instructions https://learning.aib.edu.au/mod/book/tool/print/index.php?id=97787&chapterid=29719 2/2 banks’ loan portfolios includes loans to non-financial businesses, loans to financial institutions, loans to the government, loans to households, housing loans (owner-occupied), housing loans (investment), loans to households (credit cards), and loans to community service organisations.

5. Critically analyse and evaluate how the composition of sample banks’ deposit portfolios has changed during the pandemic-affected period (March 2020–March 2021) in comparison to the pre-pandemic period (March 2019–February 2020). The composition of sample banks’ deposit portfolios includes deposits by non-financial businesses, deposits by financial institutions, deposits by government agencies, deposits by households, and deposits by community service organisations.

6. Identify and critically analyse the financial and economic implications to different stakeholders of the findings in steps 3, 4, and 5 above.
