Task

A. Fiona
Fiona is a 14 year old female. She is Australian-born, and of European descent. She was part of a group of four young females who were found to have physically assaulted another young female (aged 13). Fiona and her peers attend the same school as the victim. They followed her home from school, and once they were out of sight of the school, they held her down and repeatedly beat her. Fiona and her peers fled when an adult passerby approached the scene. The victim suffered a broken nose and substantial bruising. Fiona has not been attending school regularly – she generally attends a couple of days per week. She is disruptive in class and has been suspended for swearing at teachers and fighting with other students in the playground. She lives with her mother and two younger brothers. Her mother is unemployed and is looking for work. They live in public housing in a low socioeconomic area, in the western outer-suburbs of Sydney. Fiona does not have a relationship with her father, though he is known to have a history of violent offending. Fiona is reluctant to engage with any support services and has been uncooperative and verbally abusive to the police involved with her case.

B. Adam
Adam is a 13 year old male. He was born in Australia (his parents immigrated to Australia from England when they were young). Adam lives with his mother and father and has no siblings. They live in a small town in rural New South Wales. Both his parents work. Adam has been bullied at school over the past year, including physical and verbal abuse, after telling his family and friends that he identifies as gay, and after this information became widely known in his school. Adam was recently found to have a small bag of cannabis in his pocket while at school (a quantity most likely to be for personal use rather than dealing). The school reported the matter to the police. Adam’s family is very supportive, and both his mother and father have been very involved in dealing with the school and the police. Adam is withdrawn and quiet and is not forthcoming with any information when questioned by teachers or the police. Adam has previously been issued a warning by the police. The warning was issued when he was found with a bottle of alcohol, hanging out at a local park, while truanting from school.
