Assignment Task

This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:

  • be able to create a plan for server installation.
  • be able to deploy, manage, and maintain a network server.
  • be able to critically analyse network performance and create an optimisation strategy.
  • be able to create, critically analyse and apply a network security policy.
  • be able to design and configure an Active Directory solution.
  • be able to critically analyse and configure Group Policy and core network services.

1. An introduction, including a clear articulation of the customer requirements;

2. A high-level design of the solution, including one or more diagrams showing how the components, servers and applications will interact.

3. Consideration of how the migration will be carried out, with special care to document:

  1. How you would migrate from the current two AD domains to a single one;
  2. Setup of security controls;
  3. What OU structure and GPO’s are appropriate or required;
  4. Any use of cloud and how that integrates with the environment;

4. The proposed hardware (CPU information, RAM, storage) and OS versions (Windows server type).

5. Some details of what will change in the management of the new environment (you can either propose an “as a service” model to manage the environment for the library, or outline what will need to be done differently).

You do not need to include the costs of hardware or services

Scenario Information

The following information is all you will receive to respond to the case study. Respond strictly based on the information you are given – do not make any assumptions.

Introduction

The FBPL is currently a single-branch public library located at 226-240 Ocean Drive, Flynns Beach. The FBPL serves a population of approximately 16,000 of which approximately 12,000 are active patrons. The FBPL employs 15 full-time and 9 part-time staff.

The FBPL has a full-time Technology Manager and a full-time Information Technology (IT) Assistant.

To help fulfill the FBPL’s mission to promote lifelong learning, the FBPL uses multiple application servers to provide card catalog access, computer and printing access, as well as intranet and file sharing access to staff.

Due to the number of patrons, FBPL are also opening an additional branch location on the other side of town that will be accessed by both staff and patrons. Both locations will have business-grade internet connectivity with speeds that of at least 100Mbps and low latency.

The FBPL currently uses 13 Microsoft (MS) Windows servers, 5 of which are virtual servers (VS). The FBPL also uses 2 MS Active Directory (AD) domains, one for patrons and one for staff.

Reason for RFP

The majority of FBPL’s physical servers are over 8 years old and must be replaced. In particular, the integrated library system (ILS) server, also referred to as the card catalog server, is overdue for replacement. A successful solution proposal will meet the following objectives:

  • Enhance speed and reliability of server applications.
  • Reduce the physical footprint and overall operational and support costs.
  • Provide the ability to add application servers at minimal cost.
  • Provide redundancy and fail-over for critical application servers.
  • Integrate with existing technologies used by the FBPL.
  • Ensure that the solution is able to be supported by the existing team.
  • Provide the ability to integrate cloud technologies such as Microsoft 365.

Requirements

  • All servers, physical and virtual, must be replaced by new servers running Windows Server 2022.

    • Must provide at least two physical servers for redundancy and hardware failover.
    • All physical servers should have identical hardware specifications.
    • Virtualization software must be MS Hyper-V.
    • If appropriate, cloud (IaaS/SaaS only) can be used for some services.
  • Each physical server should be capable of simultaneously hosting virtualized versions of the existing VS listed in the tables above i.e. they should be sufficiently scaled to be able to accommodate all 5 virtual servers at the same time if required.
  • All applications must remain as is – you may assume for this purpose that all application software is compatible with Windows Server 2022.
  • All project timelines must not interrupt normal operation at the library i.e. no impact to staff or patrons.
  • Users must still be able to login if then Internet goes down.
