Data was collected through focus group interviews with university teachers and students. It was found that mobile devices were reported to have benefits for student learning, creating opportunities for interaction, and opportunities for collaboration but also presented the potential for distraction. This study was designed to investigate which mobile devices students use, what they use them for and the duration of each activity within 1-hour lectures. The method of research was a survey of 99 students across 6 faculties and a one-hour focus group discussion of students who had not completed the survey. Most students reported using a mobile device in the lecture. Mobile phones and laptops were the most common devices. The most common activity was typing notes on a laptop, followed by accessing lecture slides. In conclusion, the vast majority of mobile device usage was on task and related to the lecture, so mobile phone use in lectures should not be banned. FNDS016
