You are required to write a report of about 2000 words length on only ONE of the topics provided. Both topics are of equal value and your report will contribute 20% towards your final assessment in this course. Follow the instructions below carefully when compiling your report.
1) Literature Review

You should describe the nature of the allergy, the epidemiology (e.g. rates in Australia) and any at risk groups. What influences the severity of this allergy and what are some obvious and non- obvious sources of peanuts in Australia? What factors / agents have been proposed in scientific literature to increase the risk of this allergy? Explain the mechanisms. Explain who is responsible for regulating allergens and food labelling in Australia. What does this involve? Describe other factors which may help reduce allergen exposure. - Endocrine disrupting chemicals You should include a definition of endocrine disrupting chemicals and conditions this may be related too based on scientific literature. Describe what is known and not known about endocrine disrupting chemicals. Explain what pesticides are known or thought to disrupt the endocrine system, what are these used for in Australia (e.g. on what crops and in what levels). Are there any other sources of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Australia? Explain who is responsible for regulating pesticides / other sources of endocrine disrupting chemicals in Australia. What does this involve? Describe other factors which may help reduce exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals.
You are asked to demonstrate an understanding of the topic beyond that given in the lectures. Information should be obtained from relevant Government Websites and by searching for published articles in the scientific literature. It is suggested you prepare an assignment plan to make sure your assignment provides a logical story.
