CASE STUDY 1
LV is a 14-month-old boy who was brought by his mother to the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne Emergency Department late one evening.
His mother stated that approximately 3 hours earlier he was more distressed than usual but there was no apparent reason for his distress. She removed his nappy and noted that he had defecated. His stools were reported to be more fluid and offensive than usual.
She stated that she cleaned off the stool and cleaned his bottom with his usual Aldi brand nappy wipes. It was only when she removed the next soiled nappy 3 hours later than she noted blisters on his bottom and brought him to hospital.
You examined him and observed that he was a distressed infant who was difficult to console. When questioned further, his mother stated that she had no idea why his skin had blistered.
