ASSESSMENT TASK: DESCRIPTION
We have, as an obligation to learners, the responsibility to revisit and reimagine the spaces of learning1 that we teach and learn in. Part of the work that we have to do involves thinking through a preferred future that may require fundamental transformations of the space, particularly those taken-for-granted ones (eg. does a university classroom have to be one where students sit down looking at a lecturer who stands and speaks for 2/3 hours?). The challenge here is that ingrained ideas about learning are often resistant to change. In some respects, digital technologies can help to disrupt common-sense conventions about teaching and learning but this is sometimes (a) undermined by efforts to accommodate digital technologies in spaces of learning in ways that don’t disrupt the way “things have always been done” (eg. is PowerPoint really a novel and profoundly divergent way of presenting content?) and/or; (b) a lack of training and comfort to try new technologies that can sometime be complex and challenging to work with in dynamic ways. While this may be the case, this doesn’t offer much by way of both optimism and transformative thinking.
In this assessment, you are tasked with engaging in imaginative, optimistic and creative thinking. Specifically, you are tasked with selecting a space of learning of your choosing and fundamentally articulating a preferred future for what you think it ought to look like 10 years from now with respect to its use of digital technologies. Critically, you will engage in backcasting to trace the kinds of pedagogical, social, cultural and/or political changes required to reach your articulated future.
Unlike task two which is focused on a single and concrete issue, your task here is backcast to help tease out broader social, cultural and/or political issues that require changing. This will require less “practical” solution oriented thinking and more conceptual and critical thinking.
Task components:
You will select a space of learning, describe the (flawed) use of digital technologies in that space to support & mediate learning, and articulate a preferred future for what that could be.
You will backcast from that future to the present, speculating what kinds of pedagogical, social, cultural and/or political changes might be required to reach your articulated future. Note: the speculation here is meant to be substantiated with both scholarly literature and done so in a way that is as realistic as might be possible (ie. this isn’t fantasy or pure creative indulgence but an effort to imagine a preferred futures use of digital technologies that may be challenging to meet but possible).
You must provide some context for what backcasting is, that is, what and how do you understand the method of backcasting?
This part of the task must involve a consideration of at least 3 meaningful pedagogical, social, cultural and/or political obstacles and the required changes (described through a backcasted methodology). For example, you might consider the online disinhibition effect (the idea that people are more likely to be disinhibited because of the anonymity that the Internet provides) as an impediment to ethical learning online. A future where the ODE is minimised would require meaningful online cultural changes.
Here, you are encouraged to think beyond the need for (technical) training and simple solutions. Many of the challenges of using digital technologies require system level changes that challenges epistemological givens and beliefs. While you won’t be able to “solve” your chosen challenge (indeed, there is no expectation that you do), you are expected to make a meaningful effort and appreciating and engaging the complexities of your chosen issue(s).
