3.1 Introduction

In study unit 1 you were introduced to what research is. Among many other definitions of research, Leedy and Ormrod (2014) defines research as a systematic process of collecting analysing and interpreting information in order to increase understanding of the phenomenon of interest. The same authors also identifies 8 distinct characteristics of research, which is indicated in study unit 1. The first characteristic of research according to these authors is that research originate with a question or problem. The fourth characteristic indicates that the research is guided by the specific research problem, question or hypothesis.
