What you are going to do

Watch the “The Cat in the Hat” video posted on BrightSpace, and then provide an interpretation of “The Cat in the Hat” based upon the concepts contained in Freud’s theory of personality.

Why you are doing it

Review both the section of the textbook describing Freud’s theory of personality and Linda’s lecture video on Freud’s structure of personality. Afterwards, watch “The Cat in the Hat” video posted on BrightSpace. While you are watching “The Cat in the Hat,” ask yourself how Freud’s theory of personality might be used to interpret the story. There are many possible Freudian interpretations of who the characters from “The Cat in the Hat” represent and what the story is about. I have chosen the most straightforward interpretations of who the characters represent, but you will need to use your understanding of Freud’s theory to justify those interpretations. In terms of what the story is about, you will need to first identify the main change in the behavior of the protagonists from the beginning to the end of the story, and then both identify a Freudian concept that describes this change and justify your choice of that Freudian concept. Answer the questions on the following pages by writing as much detail as you can in the text boxes provided. Be sure to save the completed document before uploading it to the assignment folder

In providing justifications for the Freudian interpretations of the characters (the “because” sections), multiple justifications are necessary so please do not stop after providing a single justification. There is definitely enough evidence to support multiple arguments for why the characters represent the particular Freudian concepts that I have chosen for them. For example, for the Children, start by writing down everything you know about the Ego. Then explain, using examples, how the children display those qualities/characteristics. Any quality of the ego that you can't find evidence for in the children's behavior, you can then remove from your written description of the ego. What you will end up with is a clear description of the ego and clear arguments for how the children represent the ego. Follow the same structure for the Id, Superego, and Eros and Thanatos
