BACKGROUND: BANK BRANCH CLOSURES ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT
Over the past few years, bank and building society branches have been disappearing from our high streets at a rapid pace. Banks say that this has been driven by a rapid increase in online and mobile banking, and a rapid decline in use of physical branches. A 2018 briefing paper from the ‘House of Commons Library’ feared that the impact of closures will impact the elderly and other vulnerable customers, and be felt by rural communities where infrastructure may limit access to other viable alternatives such as online banking (see the full report here). This coursework is designed to follow on from “Practical 5: Identifying & managing spatial datasets”, which taught you how to access, link and query the “Ordnance Survey Points of Interest” product. From these datasets, a spatial feature layer of open and closed (after 2014) bank branch locations across the UK was created, and saved in a “File Geodatabase” (GDB). The Isle of Wight was identified as the English county with the highest rate of bank branch closures between 2014 and 2019. Over this period, 52% of the islands 42 bank branches were identified to have closed.
