1.1 Project Purpose and Justification

Due to the growing demand for safe and reliable energy, Group 2 project organization is investigating, designing, recommending, and implementing suitable electrical power energy for the rural areas of Luzon Mountains under the Rural Renewable Electrification Project. 

The project sponsor is a private benefactor (not for profit project funding). Group 2 Projects consulted with the donor and Rural Electrification Committee under the Ministry of Energy.  

Research design determines the cost, economic viability, and growing demand for safe, reliable energy, which led Group 2 Projects to a solar Photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid system solution.  PV mini grids are safer alternatives to kerosene lamps, which emit fine particulates, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide (NOx), and sulphur dioxide (SO2).  Each of the above emissions causes harm to humans, animals, and the environment.   

The findings show that the solar mini grid-connected system is economically viable for electrification for isolated, small, and remote communities where the national grid has extended distances beyond 20km. Furthermore, PV mini-grid systems can be integrated into the nationwide network as the country infrastructure evolves and extends.  

1.2 Scope Description
The project involves constructing twenty (20) similar 5kVA mini-solar grid system supplying five thousand households in rural areas of Luzon Mountains Philippines. Each PV mini-grid system will be in an area of 300m2 of land allocated by the local authorities. 

The mini-grids consist of 15 PV modules of 370W mounted on three rows of 5 panels in portrait orientation, a large-scale ground mounting system, extending 15 meters from the ground.

The single-phase 4550W, with a built-in 60A at 12V Solar charge controller, will be secured in a ventilated built room covering an area of 12m2, built with standards bricks. 

A single wooden pole will carry transmission wiring to distribute AC electricity among four households. Wooden poles would be in a hole filled with a concrete mixture. An 8-gauge insulated AC connection cable is used to link the solar power inverter to the electricity grid via the protection equipment, feeding the household.  Once inside the residence, 14-gauge insulated wire connects to a household 10W lamp. 

The distance between the solar PV panels and the solar power inverter would be maintained within a maximum of 15 meters apart. Each household will be equipped with a 10W lamp, 5A breaker, a double distribution box, and one (1) gang single switch.  

11 units of 12V, 600Ah deep cycle solar batteries will be housed in a 1200mm(W) by 440mm (Depth) by 200mm (Height) battery cabinet mounted on the wall. The design value per household is 10W, only catered for 4hours per night.

1.3 Schedule
