The reflection assessment should demonstrate the knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit. This assessment should be between 500-700 words (excluding references and reference list) and must be submitted via the Turnitin link on vUWS. Reflections are not descriptive essays – you should apply your understanding of the content (through researched empirical evidence) to your personal views/experiences and showcase that you have thought about your unique understanding of the topic through in-depth insights. Reflective practice will be addressed further in Week 9 Tutorial. This assessment requires in-text citations and a reference list. While it may be appropriate to use direct quotes in some places, this is a reflection assessment, which requires a great deal of your own understanding of the content and your own application thereof to the topic. Thus, academic writing standards apply, ie you should use your own words to showcase your understanding of topic. As such, you are encouraged to write in the first person (for example, “I think that...”). Where material is cited, this will require in-text citations and the inclusion of in a reference list (APA 7th edition). Students who do not follow academic writing standards (ie plagiarise intentionally or otherwise) may be penalised and/or reported for misconduct.

In your future careers as nurses, you will have the privilege of working with and caring for people from diverse backgrounds. Religious and cultural beliefs are profoundly linked to personal views of death and dying. As such, select a religious/cultural group that is different to one with which you personally identify and reflect on how you may offer comfort to a patient or colleague (from that selected religious/cultural group) who has recently had a loved one die. Failure to choose a religious/cultural group that is indeed different to one with which you personally identify may result in penalties for this assessment. Please confirm your group selection with your teacher prior to starting this assessment.

Your reflection should include: 

• An assessment title that is specific to your assessment. 

• A description of the beliefs and rituals regarding death that are specific to the selected group. 

• A detailed account of what you would say and do to comfort to a patient or colleague who has recently had a loved one pass away. 

• An explanation as to why this would be appropriate for a patient or colleague from the selected group. 

• A detailed account of what you should not say and do during this time as well as an explanation as to why that would be inappropriate/insensitive/prejudiced. 

• A 6th edition APA formatted reference list of at least FOUR (4) academic sources (journal articles, textbook chapters or monographs) should start on a new page after your conclusion and heading “References”. Additional sources, such as governmental websites and WHO reports may be used as necessary.
