Task
a)Use arrows on the diagram above to indicate the nature of blood present and the direction of blood flow in each side of the heart.
The right side of the heart
Firstly, Blood enters the heart through the inferior and superior vena cava -which are two large veins- carrying deoxygenated blood from the body into the right atrium. The contract of the atrium makes blood flows from the right atrium into the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. the tricuspid valve shuts when the ventricle is full which in return prevents blood from going back into the atria while the ventricle contracts. Blood leaves the heart through the pulmonic valve as the ventricle contracts, passing blood into the pulmonary artery and then to the lungs where it is oxygenated. However, the CO2 containing blood goes through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where CO2 is exchanged for O2.
The pulmonary vein function is to empty oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium. when the atrium contracts, it forces blood to flow from the left atrium into left ventricle through the mitral valve. At the time the ventricle gets full, the mitral valve shuts to prevent blood from flowing backward into the atrium while the ventricle contracts. when the ventricle contracts, oxygenated blood leaves the heart through the aortic valve, into the aorta and arteries, and finally into veins to complete the blood circulation.
